Malaysia has introduced a new data portal known as GEOHUB, which integrates the country’s geospatial information and official statistics.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin of the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), said that “DOSM GEOHUB offers various functions that support access, usage and understanding of national statistics based on geospatial elements”.
According to the DOSM, the data portal — which was developed in house — supports planning and development at the national, state, and administrative district levels through the provision of more organised, easily comprehensible, and location-based online data delivery.
It is also a crucial initiative towards government digital services through the provision of digital mapping and spatial analytics to all users.
The platform enables users to overlay various kinds of datasets to see the interplay between them.
According to the GEOHUB documentation, it is an integrated geospatial platform that allows users to access, explore, and analyse location-based statistical data by combining official data with 2D web mapping technology so that users can:
- View profile dashboards covering socioeconomic statistics;
- Explore interactive thematic maps with spatial analysis capabilities;
- Access geospatial-statistical data layers; and
- Read storymaps that present development narratives using maps, graphics and images.
GEOHUB is based on Enterprise GIS, Spatial Database Management System (SDBMS), and geospatial web services (WMS, WMTS, Feature Services) to ensure that data is consistently updated, reliable and easily accessible by government agencies and public users.
