Applications are now open for Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand external tertiary GIS scholarships, which aim to help build New Zealand’s geospatial workforce by encouraging students to take up geospatial studies.

“Toitū Te Whenua is very pleased to offer these scholarships to recognise the importance of high-value geographic and property information to our economy, environment and society now, and into the future,” said Head of Location Information, Aaron Jordan.

Each scholarship will contribute to undergraduate or postgraduate fees for GIS-related courses or research during the scholarship period, up to a maximum of NZ$5,000.

Toitū Te Whenua established its external tertiary GIS scholarships in 2018. Past recipients’ research topics have included:

  • Use of geospatial information to help locate transient people during natural disasters
  • Application of new digital spatial technologies to mātauranga Māori
  • How the concept of cognitive infocommunications (CogInfoCom) can enhance geospatial interface designs in the workplace.

Applications for this year’s Toitū Te Whenua external GIS tertiary scholarships are open from 2 October 2023 until 12 November 2023.
