The International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC) is inviting input on a routine review of the Standards of Competence.

The FIG/IHO/ICA body is reviewing the Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers, aiming to update the S-5 and S-8 standards by 2026.

Initial consultations have already been conducted at conferences and symposia, and further consultations are planned for upcoming regional hydrographic meetings and conferences.

National Hydrographic Offices and institutions offering IBSC-recognised education and training programs are being encouraging to provide feedback via an online questionnaire by 23 October 2024.

The IBSC is seeking to learn which new topics must be added to the standards, which can be removed, and the appropriate level of knowledge required for Category A and B qualifications.

According to the IBSC, these standards were last revised between 2014 and 2017, and since then, numerous advancements have had an influence on hydrography, such as new survey and sensor technologies, increased data volumes, and developments in ICT and next-generation products, such as S100 HDM.
