Missouri State University has developed a new bachelor’s degree program in geotourism.
The new degree is being offered by the university’s department of geography, geology and planning. The four-year course will combine cultural and environmental geography with community planning, development and tourism.
The university based the course on information, concepts and materials from National Geographic’s Center for Sustainable Destinations. The program will include the study of local and global tourism impacts, with the primary focus on enhancing the quality of life of all affected by tourism development.
Geotourism is tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place, according to Jonathan Tourtellot, National Geographic Society Fellow.
“Geotourism incorporates the concept of sustainable tourism, that destinations should remain unspoiled for future generations, while allowing for ways to protect a place’s character,” he said.
Graduates of the program will be prepared for careers in fields such as philanthropic foundations, tour operations, community development and environmental organisations.
