This year’s International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) e-Working Week will be held online from June 20 to 25, with the associated General Assembly happening over two days, June 20 and 25.

Originally to have been held in 2020 as a normal annual Working Week, the event had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will now be held in a virtual format as an e-Working Week.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Smart Surveyors for Land and Water Management — Challenges in a New Reality,’ and the program comprises a mixture of keynote, technical and partner sessions, as well as special FIG sessions, workshops and virtual networking opportunities.

The water aspect of the theme is particular pertinent to The Netherlands, the formal host for the event and the country that had been slated to host the in-person event in 2020.

The Netherlands is one of the most surveyed regions in the world, with, it is claimed, every square metre mapped, registered and documented — not a bad idea for a country that has 55% of its land area below sea level.

The program will also cover the ways in which the surveying and geospatial sectors can play a vital role in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, respond to the COVID pandemic and prepare the next generation of professionals for the challenges faced by rapid urban growth and other societal changes.

The FIG, founded in 1878, has around 250,000 members in 120 countries.
