Google has removed the tag identifying the Persian Gulf from its popular mapping service, angering the Iranian government. Tehran says it will sue the search giant. ZDNet has the full story.
 
The All Points Blog alerts us that GITA (in the US) has cancelled the Oil and Gas Conference, and stating that “The GITA Board of Directors is meeting in the near future to discuss what the future holds for the association. More information will be released on this website, as well as to GITA’s various stakeholder groups as soon as possible.”
 
Part 2 of Google Maps Mania’s “Mapping with Drones” is now live. It’s a great guide on how to capture aerial imagery on the cheap, ie with balloons, kites, or UAVs, and how to get it onto Google Maps.

The Google Earth Blog has a great rundown of the tools available for information on the recent (and coming) eclipses, including one that highlights the best places to view it from.
 
If you’re in the grips of Olympic fever, perhaps you should scoot on over to Google Maps Mania (again) for their overview of Olympic Torch relay maps.
