The importance of Australia's international space science collaboration was highlighted recently at a meeting between NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden, Jr. and Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr.
International cooperation is key to the success of virtually all space endeavours, with space infrastructure and its applications playing an important part in the daily lives of all Australians.
The use of satellites for navigation, data capture, communication, and weather observations are but a few examples.
Australia's relationship with the United States and NASA is extremely important to Australia's economy, environment and national security.
"Space science co-operation between Australia and the United States has a long and proud history and I am enthusiastic about exploring future opportunities in the area," Senator Carr said.
Administrator Bolden and Senator Carr discussed issues that included Australia's national space policy development, the Australian Space Research Program and NASA's involvement, future NASA missions and potential future Australian-United States collaboration.
"The Australian Government is keen to encourage further opportunities for international collaboration with NASA and the United States regarding civil space science activities. Australia has significant niche capabilities to contribute in the international arena," Senator Carr said.
Administrator Bolden and Senator Carr also discussed NASA's interest in future space science collaborations, including in the area of Earth observation.
"The Government's Australian Space Research Program, which aims to develop our niche space capabilities by supporting space-related research, innovation and skills, is a great example of the international collaboration that is possible." Senator Carr said
Administrator Bolden and Senator Carr agreed that today's meeting was an important step towards more partnerships in increased space science.
