Innovation and Commercialisation Award: Services Mapping Using Ground Penetrating RADAR – Whelans InSites

This project employed a new method of determining the reliable location of underground assets. It is especially useful where no information – or inaccurate information – exists. Judges stated that this project has the capacity to become the new benchmark in near-surface 3D mapping.

Land Titling and Development Industry Award: Not Your Average Strata Duplex – Project Surveyors

The job was a complex strata title survey, which involved a mix of technical, project management and client liaison requirements. The approach by the firm showed excellent planning, execution and client management. The results were shared with other practitioners to increase the profession’s understanding of how to approach complex strata surveys.

People and Community Industry Award: Shire Maps – Sutherland Shire Council

This project received high praise from the judges who felt that testimonials demonstrated the acceptance of Shire Maps with 60% repeat visitors. This was clearly the result of a highly successful marketing campaign that included in-house training for staff, community library staff and school principals.

Infrastructure and Construction Award: ‘Measure, Monitor, Mapping’ Campaign on BlueScope Steel’s Number 5 Blast Furnace Reline Project –
AAM Pty Ltd and BlueScope Steel

This project was considered by the judges to be one of the more complex tasks undertaken in this field. It demonstrated significant innovation through the linking of a number of technologies and skills that enabled the contractor to solve problems and to deal with what was a logistical nightmare.

Environment and Sustainability Industry Award: Climate Watch –
Earthwatch Institute in partnership with the Bureau of Meteorology and the University of Melbourne

This is an excellent example of how the public be engaged in the new and emerging area of ‘citizen science’. Climate Watch democratises science by using web and spatial technologies – that are now considered a part of mainstream – in a way that maximises public engagement. It is an excellent example of the use of open-source software in a production environment.

Spatially Enabled Government Award: Health Tracks – Spatial Vision and Department of Health WA

The judges said that Health Tracks is a very good example of existing, robust technology to address a particular information / decision-making issue. The strength of Health Tracks is that the developers have thought about the nature of health data and designed ways to disseminate and visualise it rather than starting with spatial paradigms and looking for what health data can be made to fit that paradigm.

J.K. Barrie Award for Overall Excellence: ‘Measure, Monitor, Mapping’ Campaign on BlueScope Steel’s Number 5 Blast Furnace Reline Project –
AAM Pty Ltd and BlueScope Steel

The judges commented that the 2010 J. K. Barrie Award winning project is an excellent demonstration of how surveyors have adapted their knowledge and experience to capture high-quality measurements within a short time-frame under hazardous conditions.
