The Association of Public Authority Surveyors NSW (APAS) prides itself on organising an annual conference which is highly informative, focussed on practical outcomes relevant to the surveying and spatial information community and provides ample opportunity for interaction with colleagues and exhibitors showcasing their newest technology. Traditionally, about one third of delegates belong to private industry.

The APAS2016 conference will be held in Leura in the Blue Mountains on 4-6 April 2016. As usual, the annual team building event will be held on the 1st day, followed by paper presentations on the 2nd and 3rd day of the conference. In 2016, the conference theme is ‘Aspiring the Heights’.

APAS was formed in 1994 primarily to cater for the needs of surveying and spatial information professionals working within state and local government and the education sector. However, private surveyors also benefit immensely from APAS events such as conferences and seminars, which form an important part of the annual professional development events calendar.

The conference program is shaping up to be another cracker, ensuring that delegates will be kept up to date on a wide variety of topics, including:

  • Precise GNSS positioning and CORSnet-NSW
  • Australia’s DGPS service and recent developments in the US
  • Modernisation of the Australian datum
  • A single cadastre for NSW
  • Legal aspects of boundary surveying as applicable to Crown lands
  • Riparian cadastral boundaries
  • Subsurface stratum acquisition
  • Creating a new digital surface and elevation model for NSW
  • Recent developments in GIS, LiDAR and Mobile Laser Scanning
  • A digital planning system for NSW
  • Railway underbridge renewal surveys
  • WHS issues when working near roads
  • Connecting students to industry and the ‘GPS in Schools’ project

It is expected that APAS2016 will satisfy the yearly continuing professional development (CPD) requirements in regards to both cadastral and surveying practice CPD points.

More information about APAS2016, including the draft conference program, registration form and the proceedings of past conferences can be found on the APAS website: http://www.apas.org.au/.
