Airservices seeks input into UAV management

By on 11 May, 2021

Airservices Australia is seeking to collaborate with industry on the formation of a ‘data exchange gateway’ to help unmanned air vehicles co-exist with the existing air traffic control network.

The proposed Flight Information Management System (FIMS) will connect Unmanned Aerial System Traffic Management (UTM) operators with Australia’s air traffic management system.

FIMS will “provide important airspace information to airspace users and facilitate the safe, reliable and efficient use of airspace, while also supporting the growth of an open and competitive drone market,” according to an Airservices announcement.

Airservices has issued an RFP for the project, and wants to work with industry in the coming months to develop a FIMS prototype “to test the provision of a range of government and industry services”.

“The FIMS is a key step in shaping a future air navigation service which safely integrates traditional aircraft and new users while ensuring the most efficient use of airspace,” said Airservices’ Chief Customer Experience and Strategy Officer, Peter Curran.

Submissions to the RFP can be made until 11:59pm on June 9, 2021.
