A weekly round-up of geospatial news that didn’t make it into our normal daily coverage.
If you have a Spatial Snippet to share with our readers, please send us an email.
We’ll start off this week with some event news. Although the detailed program for the Locate26 Conference/10th Digital Earth Summit is already out, still to come is final confirmation of the workshops to take place on the day before the main event kicks off. Those details are due out any day now, so please keep an eye on Spatial Source — we’ll bring you the information the minute it becomes available.
Don’t forget that the 2026 Advancing Earth Observation Forum will be held in Hobart a couple of weeks prior to Locate26, and the 2026 Pacific Islands GIS & Remote Sensing User Conference will be held in Fiji the week after.
The dates have been confirmed for next year’s Geo Connect Asia conference and exhibition, which, as always, will take place in Singapore. Your editor attended this year’s event and had a great time. It’s worth a visit if you get a chance — mark your calendar for 17 and 18 March 2027.
Another overseas event that looks quite interesting is the UK Association for Geographic Information’s (AGI) GeoCom 26 Digital Sovereignty Conference, which is coming up in November. Billing itself as “the only independent event in the UK geographic information calendar that is organised for geospatial professionals by geospatial professionals,” GeoCom 26 will “explore practical, technological, and resilient solutions for the UK geo industry to evolve and maintain global leadership in location intelligence”.
And in February next year, US Geo Week event will take place at its new home in Salt Lake City, Utah. The event will convene geospatial and mapping professionals from a dozen vertical markets, and will include co-located user meetings (e.g. ASPRS, Reality Capture Network). The 2026 event had 238 exhibitors, 3,800-plus registrants, and hosted a record 3,500-plus delegates on-site from 50-plus nations. You can use code SAVE100 for a US$100 discount on any registration option.
Moving to other news, if you’re involved in planning or land administration in NSW, please be aware that NSW Land Registry Services will be relocating its offices next month from Level 30, 175 Liverpool Street, Sydney, to Level 44, 680 George Street, Sydney. The last day at the old address will be 16 October and the first day at the new address will be 19 October. The operating hours won’t change, and all the phone numbers and email addresses will stay the same.
North of the border, Titles Queensland has announced that its Brisbane Office is no longer available for public access, following the closure of its drop box facility on 4 September. All lodgements must be submitted via online lodgement or post.
In Victoria, DataShare will be off the air for upgrades from 5:00pm to 7:00pm tonight, 30 September, and for the same hours tomorrow night as well. According to a notice posted by DataShare, “Enterprise Spatial Services (ESS) will be upgrading the underlying spatial databases from which core spatial services source spatial data and information. As such, reliant services like DataShare, Vector Data Replication Services and the Open Data Platform will be offline during the upgrade.”
“Enterprise Spatial Services (ESS) will also be upgrading the underlying operating system and core components of the DataShare Platform servers. As part of this work, key components will be updated to newer software versions including, the latest security and vulnerability patches which will improve stability and security of DataShare.”

This week’s geospatial job vacancies
Here are some jobs we’ve spotted on our rounds this past week. The usual proviso applies — between the time these words are written and when you read them, some of the jobs might already have been filled or withdrawn.
In Queensland, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has a few jobs going. The first is for a Spatial Science Officer based in Brisbane, to join the Engineering & Technology Branch to work with contemporary GIS, web mapping and spatial technologies to develop digital mapping products, analyse and manage geospatial data, and deliver trusted spatial information. Applications close on 12 October.
The second vacancy is for a Senior Surveyor to join the Technical Services unit, based in Cairns, to manage survey projects and deliver geospatial products and services across the engineering project lifecycle, supporting the planning, design, construction and management of the road network. Applications close on 2 October.
The third TMR vacancy is for a Surveyor, also to be based in Cairns as part of the Technical Services unit. The role involves delivering engineering survey projects and providing technical expertise in geospatial applications to support the planning, design, construction and management of the road network. Applications close on 8 October.
And the fourth TMR vacancy is for a Principal Advisor (Traffic & Transport Modelling), a role that will involve leading the regional traffic and transport modelling team. Tertiary qualifications at the degree level or higher in transport planning, engineering, town planning, statistics, GIS, modelling, mathematics or similar, is desirable. Applications close on 8 October.
Still in Queensland, and the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development is seeking a Senior Surveyor to lead a surveying services team and supervise land-related surveying operations, review technical work, deliver projects, provide specialist cadastral surveying advice and support business reform. The role suits an experienced surveying professional. Applications close tomorrow, 1 October.
The same department is looking for a Senior Consultation & Land Outcomes Officer to lead complex land administration projects, coordinate tenure research, mapping and legislative processes, and provide expert advice that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land outcomes. Applications close on 7 October.
In NSW, the State Emergency Service is seeking a Spatial Analyst, Clerk Grade 5/6, to leverage their expertise in GIS, spatial analysis and data visualisation to deliver geospatial intelligence products and services. The role includes developing maps, dashboards and field collection tools, and supporting effective administration of the NSW Flood Data Portal and flood data management services. Applications close on 5 October.
The NSW Department of Fisheries and Forestry is looking for a Geospatial Data Scientist to turn remotely sensed data into insights that shape how the state’s forests are monitored and managed. Working with hyperspectral, multispectral and LiDAR data from satellite, aerial and terrestrial platforms, the successful applicant will develop machine learning, deep learning and statistical models to characterise and predict forest attributes, while also building the analysis-ready data products behind current and future research projects. Applications close on 8 November.
The NSW Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity needs a Spatial & Data Intelligence Officer to develop GIS products, Power BI dashboards, data models and system integrations, while identifying opportunities to improve business processes and the value of data governance. The role also contributes to emergency preparedness and response activities supporting biosecurity and food safety operations across NSW. Applications close today, 30 September.
The NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has four roles going. The first is for a Program Support Officer Early Change Monitoring to work within the office of the Biodiversity and Heritage Regulator, to assist in the delivery of land and vegetation monitoring programs and projects by providing GIS skills and engaging with internal and external stakeholders. Experience in aerial photo interpretation, remote sensing, and use of common GIS programs is desired. Applications close on 6 October.
The second and third vacancies are for two Senior Conservation Planning Officers to join the Conservation Planning and Assessment Branch and provide expert advice on strategic and statutory planning matters that support environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and natural resource management across the state. Accreditation in the Biodiversity Offset Scheme, experience in ecological survey and GIS skills will be advantageous. Applications close on 11 October.
And the fourth vacancy within the Department is for a Project Officer, also within the Conservation Planning and Assessment Branch.
