AFAC18 to make landfall in Perth

By on 22 August, 2018

Australia’s biggest emergency management conference will take over the Perth convention centre from September 5-8, 2018.

Also comprising the Australian Disaster Resilience Conference, AFAC18’s organisers say that the overall objective of the event is to ‘equip the sector to thrive in an uncertain future’ — improving preparedness of individuals, as well as the emergency management and disaster resilience sector to survive in a rapidly changing environment.

Program highlights for the event include NASA Astronaut Mike Mullane, whom the organisers say will share insights from a unique career, including firsthand experience of the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster.

Craig Fugate, a former Administrator of the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, will present to delegates on ‘the seven deadly sins of emergency management‘, and keynote presentations from:

  • Neil Burrows, Senior Principal Research Scientist, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Western Australia
  • Anna-Maria Arabia, Chief Executive, Australian Academy of Science
  • Eric Yap, Commissioner, Singapore Civil Defence Force
  • Dr Dana Born, Co-Director, Centre for Public Leadership, Harvard Kennedy School of Government

The AFAC18 program will open with the annual research forum presented by the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre on September 5, with the event closing on September 8.

Highlights of the Australian Disaster Resilience Conference program include:

  • Phil Rist, Nywaigi Traditional Owner
  • Jane Hayward AM, teaching Principal, Strathewen Primary School
  • Dr Megan McCarthy, Macquarie University/Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC
  • Dr Rachel Armstrong, Department of Fire and Emergency Services, WA
