Autodesk and Dropbox announce AutoCAD integration

Filesharing platform Dropbox has announced new integration capabilities with Autodesk’s AutoCAD software.

As of today, AutoCAD users can now open project files directly from Dropbox, and save back seamlessly to Dropbox without leaving the AutoCAD environment, via a new Dropbox app for AutoCAD. Dropbox claims this is the next step in a partnership with Autodesk, aiming to ‘build deeper integrations and provide architecture, engineering, construction, and manufacturing professionals with new, innovative features.’

The announcement follows the unveiling of their DBX platform, a secure set of APIs and tool suites intended to break down content silos, and specifically targeting integration with AutoCAD, Atlassian project management software, and Microsoft Outlook.

Dropbox’s blog claims that users will soon be able to access rich previews of AutoCAD design files directly from Dropbox, meaning users will soon be able to view and comment on .DWG files while in the field, without needing to have AutoCAD or Dropbox installed across all devices, but allowing Dropbox take care of syncing across devices.

“Our technology partnership with Dropbox leverages Forge web services and delivers a seamless collaboration experience for our joint customers. This integration removes friction for our customers trying to access, review, and move data from task to task,” said Amy Bunszel, SVP Design & Creation Products at Autodesk, on Dropbox’s blog.
