APAS takes on GDA2020 at Port Stephens this March

The Association of Public Authority Surveyors NSW (APAS) prides itself on running an annual conference which is highly informative, focussed on practical outcomes for surveying and spatial information community and creates an opportunity for networking and exhibitions of the latest technologies. Traditionally, about one third of delegates at APAS belong to private industry.

This year, APAS2017 conference will be held in at the Ramada Resort in Shoal Bay, Port Stephens on 20-22 March 2017 (Monday – Wednesday). As usual, the annual team building event will be held on the first day, followed by paper presentations on the second and third day of the conference. In 2017, the conference theme is ‘2020 Vision’, in response to the launch of GDA2020 earlier in the year.

As such a number of the presentations are focussed on Australia’s datum modernisation program, among a wide variety of interesting topics, including:

  • Spatial Services initiatives to improve the preservation of survey infrastructure – Narelle Underwood
  • GDA2020, AUSGeoid2020 and ATRF – Volker Janssen
  • GDA2020 in NSW – Nicholas Gowans
  • Survey control and quality assurance for aerial imagery and elevation models across NSW – Lisa Powell
  • Impact of the proposed Surveying and Spatial Information Regulation 2017 – Simon Hine
  • Native title, compensation and the public authority land manager – Craig Barnes
  • Rural cadastral survey of Crown land under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act – Anthony Oliver
  • Unlocking the potential of UAS for surveying and mapping – Yincai Zhou
  • The first absolute gravity observations in Australia and New Zealand – Case Bosloper

Present at APAS2017 will be Surveyor General of NSW Narelle Underwood, President of ISNSW Michael Green, SSSI President Gaby van Wyk and APAS President Thomas Grinter.

It is expected that APAS2017 will satisfy the yearly continuing professional development (CPD) requirements in regards to both cadastral and surveying practice CPD points.

APAS was formed in 1994 primarily to cater for the needs of surveying and spatial information professionals working within state and local government and the education sector. However, private surveyors also benefit immensely from APAS events such as the annual conference, which has become an important part of the annual professional development events calendar.
