From 1 July, UNSW School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems adopted the new name UNSW School of Surveying and Geospatial Engineering.

Chris Rizos, head of school, commented “The new school name better reflects the fact that our graduate engineers now have several career options, from the well-established career path as professional surveyors, to the myriad opportunities in new industries that develop or use geospatial technologies.

“Surveyors provide critical engineering services for all construction, mining, land development, and mapping projects – they help shape our landscape and their services underpin a broad range of economic activities. Australia’s mining and infrastructure industries are offering great opportunities for graduate surveyors.

“Our geospatial engineering degree, the Bachelor of Engineering (GeoInformation Systems), emphasises the understanding and application of the rapidly-developing geospatial technologies associated with navigation (including personal navigation), mapping, geographic information systems and remote sensing.

“Graduates will enter a wide variety of industries engaged in earth observation, mobile mapping, geodatabase development, location-based services and many more. Geospatial technologies are at the core of the new digital information revolution and every year exciting new career opportunities are being created.

“All our graduates gain engineering skills associated with the acquisition, analysis and management of geographically-referenced information about the world around us. The career opportunities of surveyors and geospatial engineers are more numerous and more rewarding than ever before.”

The new school website is available at http://www.ssis.unsw.edu.au. Email addresses and phone numbers remain unchanged.
