Mapping the Burning Rainforest

Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) uses satellite data to assess the levels of wildfire in the Amazon rainforest. Inpe says that this data shows an 84% increase in wildfires in the Amazon this year over the same period in 2018.

While watching a documentary on PBS about the Woodstock Festival on its 50th Anniversary, I noticed an intricate site map. The site was spread out and I imagine one could get lost easily-especially if under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

There is more than one way to pin a map, as evidenced by 27 pages devoted to the subject in Graphic Methods for Presenting Facts. Author Willard C. Brinton dedicated an entire chapter of this 1919 book to pins, which was was “undoubtedly everything that could be said about map pins at the time,” jokes contemporary cartography expert John Krygier.

Mapping the Local Void

A team of researchers led by University of Hawaii astronomer Brent Tully has mapped the structure of the universe at a vast scale. In particular, they have mapped the shape of the Local Void, an empty expanse of intergalactic space hundreds of millions of light years across; the Milky Way is found at the edge of the Void.
