The State of GIS Seminar is the biggest spatial event in Tasmania. Retaining the same proven format of short, sharp 10-minute presentations, the State of GIS Seminar offers a unique opportunity to network, to hear about the latest projects from around the state, and to share your work experiences with fellow spatial professionals.
Trade sponsors, both locally and from interstate, will exhibit their latest spatial technology offerings. The Exhibition commences at 12:30. A light lunch will be served during the exhibition so it’s a good time to catch up with people and talk to exhibitors as well as have something to eat.
Presentations begin at 1:50pm and the event concludes with a networking drinks and canapés session, concluding at 6.30 pm.
The Australian National Data Service (ANDS) is facilitating a one day seminar/workshop of interest to the drone and spatial data research community.
The use of spatial data and drones is rapidly increasing across academia and research resulting in the generation of high-resolution geospatial information. The deployment of these advanced technologies not only provide greater opportunities and enable innovation in research but also present equal challenges in data management, technological & computing capabilities, sensitivities and other ethical issues.
The Australian National Data Service (ANDS), a federally funded NCRIS facility, is facilitating a workshop on drones and big spatial data which aims to bring together researchers and data specialists from various disciplines and agencies to showcase their expertise, knowledge and information exchange. This workshop consists of presentations, multiple hands-on tutorials, and also provides the participants with an opportunity for networking with leading spatial data experts.
There is no cost to register for this event but registration is essential for catering if you are attending the full day program. There is also an option available to choose either to attend morning seminar or afternoon hands-on session only.

The Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute in conjunction with the Australasian Hydrographic Society will be holding a World Hydrography Day (WHD) seminar and dinner in Darwin on 21 June 2017.
Many end users of spatial data may not be directly involved in hydrographic surveying but will have some link to the outputs. To understand what hydrographic surveyors can provide your spatial profession you should consider attending this seminar and realise your unknown connection.
Areas where hydrographic surveying influences other spatial sciences and are intended topics of the seminar include:
- LiDAR deployment from boat – links with all of the other SSSI Commissions, infrastructure, environmental monitoring;
- ROV operations – links to engineers, infrastructure inspection, environmental science;
- Feature detection using Sonar, Magnetometer – links to pipeline survey, ports and harbour navigational safety, UXO (Unexploded Ordnance);
- Depiction and modelling of bathymetry Bathy – links to GIS;
- The land/sea interface and the linkages to the vertical datum and mapping;
- Drone work – links to remote sensing; etc
The WHD theme for the seminar is “Mapping our seas and oceans – more important than ever.” This theme will raise awareness that depths have not been directly measured in about 50% of the World’s coastal waters and about 90% of the oceans. Further, it raises awareness of the current lack of comprehensive data to underpin many maps and charts of the seas and oceans. It will help promote and encourage innovative supplementary data gathering and data maximizing initiatives already under investigation in the IHO, including crowd-sourced bathymetry (volunteered geographic data) and satellite-derived bathymetry.
The theme will also help to promote the increasing role of those involved in hydrography in maritime spatial data infrastructures and the benefits of making hydrographic data accessible to the widest possible audience for uses that go well beyond the safety of navigation.
Following the successful inaugural RPAS in Australian Skies conference in March, 2016, Australian Association for Unmanned Systems (AAUS) is proud to be continuing this very important discussion within the aviation community.
This years event RPAS in Australian Skies 2017 will be held in Canberra during June 27-28, 2017. The conference format will include key note presentations from CASA, Air Services, Defence and Industry as well as panel discussion sessions. The following themes will be explored:

The Far North GIS Users Group (FUNGIS) aims to unite the far northern spatial community through events and workshops, the sharing of resources and the distribution of news of local geospatial initiatives.
On the Thursday, the participants will be challenged by the Queensland Police in Disaster Response and Search and Rescue. You can then learn more about spatial information in the new Queensland Globe, mapping marine debris and 3D modelling -that’s just in the morning. The afternoon will cover how UAVs can be used in innovative agriculture and get a quickie on practical drone use.
Friday will be focused on getting you trained up, flying and analysing the data that comes out of a semi-professional drone.
