Survey and Spatial NZ is to adopt a new membership framework and introduce a certified cadastral surveyor pathway.

The membership restructure reflects a desire for a system that better reflects modern needs, while the new Certified Professional Cadastral Surveyor (CPCS) pathway will enable cadastral surveyors to demonstrate verified capabilities beyond the baseline.

Both changes are due to come into effect on 1 July 2026.

New membership structure

Survey and Spatial NZ (S+SNZ) says that the current membership structure “has evolved over time, and while it has served us well, it has also become increasingly difficult to explain. Members, employers, and new entrants often struggle to understand what each level represents and how progression works.”

Each stage of the new structure will reflect a combination of experience, professionalism, and (where applicable) certification:

  • Student
  • Member
  • Professional member
  • Certified professional member
  • Retired member

According to S+SNZ, “This creates a pathway that is easier to understand, easier to navigate, and more meaningful both within the profession and externally”.

The organisation says the new structure provides a clear career pathway from entry level through to advanced professional recognition, and aligns membership levels with experience and standards.

In addition, it aims to strengthen the meaning of professional titles for employers, clients, and stakeholders, and support long-term sustainability of the organisation.

“It also ensures that progression is not just about time served, but about maintaining professional standards through ongoing development and ethical practice,” S+SNZ says.

Existing S+SNZ members will automatically transition into the new structure, and certification remains optional, not mandatory.

Beyond the baseline

The new CPCS pathway is an optional certification intended for licensed cadastral surveyors (LCS) who desire to demonstrate verified capability in key areas of practice that go beyond baseline licensing.

The certification adds a layer of professional recognition on top of the already high-standard LCS licence and will enable S+SNZ to formally recognise and support additional competencies that are becoming more important in practice, especially when working with councils and other stakeholders.

S+SNZ cites work such as building location certificates, as-built surveys and topographic surveys as being areas in which many LCS professionals work, “but which are not explicitly covered by licensing alone”.

The organisation is also at pains to point out that this new CPCS pathway is entirely optional and “sits alongside existing certification pathways” — it doesn’t replace them.
