“The Internet Map” shows the 350,000 largest websites in the world.

 

If you ever tried to answer the question “What does the internet look like?” an endless tangle of cables isn’t a very satisfying image. Maps Mania has made a collection of different spatial representations of the internet – all of them infinitely more satisfying.

 

A few weeks ago we previewed new UAV technology based on birds. Spectrum IEEE’s post, Robotic Cockroach Launches Robotic Bird, is as weird as it sounds, and shows how this technology is really taking off (pun intended).

 

Colombia’s second largest city, Medellín, became renowned as the home of the famously murderous cartel boss Pablo Escobar. Now you can see (and hear) how things have changed by immersing yourself amongst the city’s singing street vendors with interactive map Pregoneros de Medellín, as posted by Maps Mania.

 

The little-reported conflicts taking place in Yemen were exposed on the Google Earth Blog with this aerial image of Sana’s airport before and after a devastating bombing.

 

Frank Jacobs’ controversial post on Strange Maps discussed and mapped the possibility of a new country emerging from within Afghanistan- Talibanistan.

 

Scared of sharks? Prepare to be terrified by this basking shark’s enormous jaws as viewed from a drone on dronelife. Believe it or not, basking sharks are totally harmless.

 

Every now and then, a satellite finds itself in just the right spot. Last week, NASA’s CloudSat captured a rare glimpse of the eye of Typhoon Dolphin, as shown by Gizmodo.
