Aerial photography of Christchurch earthquake now available

By on 5 April, 2011

Two days after the magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit Christchurch, on 24 February 2011 NZ Aerial Mapping Limited flew a Rockwell 690 at 5,500 feet acquiring 10 cm GSD imagery, using its Vexcel UCXp large-format digital camera over the urban area.

This imagery was flown, processed and supplied by NZ Aerial Mapping Ltd at the request of the NZ Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM)to help the work of the Christchurch Response Centre (CRC).

This is interesting in itself, but what’s more interesting is that the data – all 19GB of it – has been released under a creative commons licence, meaning it’s free to download and use.

The images are in georeferenced TIFF format.

Update: It seems that the koordinates website is giving a server error. It was working previously, and should come back in time.

Update 2: The site is now back up.
