NASA’s Earthdata service has released new tutorials and data recipes for GIS users who wish to brush up on their skills.

The resources make use of NASA data, such as those from the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) and the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) platform.

The step-by-step guides have been put together by NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems GIS Team (EGIST). They show how to add downloaded data to common GIS programs, how to use web and image services to access the data, and how to create time-enabled multidimensional mosaic datasets.

The four new data recipes and tutorials are as follows.

The ‘Add Downloaded Data to Common GIS Programs’ guide shows how to add basemaps, download vector layers and raster layers into QGIS, and also gives a rundown on how to add data into ArcGIS Pro.

The ‘Use Web/Image Services to Access NASA Earth Science Data in Common GIS Programs’ guide shows how to add a Web Service and an Image Service to QGIS, while also explaining about the OGC (WMS) Service. It then goes on to describe the use of Web Service and Image Service with ArcGIS Pro.

The ‘Create a NetCDF Mosaic in ArcGIS Pro Using MERRA-2 Data’ data recipe guide covers such activities as preparing data using Panoply, creating a File Geodatabase and Mosaic Dataset, adding NetCDF files to the Mosaic Dataset, and more.

The ‘Create a GeoTIFF Mosaic in ArcGIS Pro Using ECOSTRESS Data’ data recipe explains how to create a time-enabled multidimensional mosaic dataset using GeoTIFF/Cloud Optimised GeoTIFF (COG) files in ArcGIS Pro.
