Landgate’s Strategy and Innovation section recently hosted two University of Western Australia (UWA) students on short-term internships.
The placements for Banjan Lanzona and Arthur Lian were arranged through the McCusker Centre for Citizenship at UWA. Interns work for an agreed number of days per week to complete the required 100 hours while also undertaking their university studies.
During their internships, Lanzona and Lian worked on projects to explore emerging technology trends for consideration in Landgate’s strategic planning session.
Lanzona investigated Metaverse and Web 3.0 topics while Lian investigated automation and AI. Each of them had the opportunity to summarise their findings in a report presented to senior leaders.
Speaking of the value of the internships, Landgate’s People, Culture and Environment Director, Agnes Elstone, said “Not only is it an opportunity for those joining us to learn more about working at a state government agency, but it’s also great for Landgate, as these new staff bring new perspectives and ideas into our business”.
Lanzona, who is studying a Master of Business Analytics at UWA, applied for the internship to improve his employability and gain connections and experience in a professional setting.
“As an aspiring business consultant, an internship is a huge competitive advantage, and I also wanted to understand how businesses in Australia work, and how different they are from how I worked previously in the Philippines,” he said.
“The most rewarding part of the internship, however, was being a part of a community that strives towards a goal, and being able to work on something that could potentially help the whole of Western Australian in the future.”
Landgate’s Strategy, Innovation and Improvement Senior Manager, Sharon Dignard, was Ban’s internship supervisor.
“Internships are an important way for students and graduates to get used to work environments, and to understand the diversity of roles that they may not have considered, like working in the public sector,” Ms Dignard said.
