The University of New South Wales School of Civil and Environmental Engineering has announced a brand new double degree in both surveying and civil engineering, which will commence in Semester 1, 2016. The new dual award program will cater for students wishing to gain accreditation as both engineers and surveyors. The five year program will provide solid background that will prepare students for learning knowledge and skills in both these engineering disciplines, allowing students great flexibility in their future careers.

Surveying presents itself as a gleaming opportunity for those wishing to enter the field. A 2014 study named a surveying degree the most underrated in Australia, with 90% of surveying graduates find work in their chosen field. The projected shortage of between 800-1300 registered surveyors in NSW by 2025, suggests the opportunities will only continue to grow.

Example career opportunities for those completed the dual degree include an engineer for a consulting firm, construction and contracting companies, government, private surveying firms working in land management and planning, cadastral surveying and land law, the mining industry, hydrographic surveying, aerial imaging and cartography.

Graduating students will be eligible for accreditation as Civil Engineers with Engineers Australia, as well as Surveyors through the Institution of Surveyors NSW and the NSW Board of Surveying and Spatial Information (BOSSI).

Current students will be able to transfer from an Engineering program into this program.

For more information and a sample study program see the announcement flyer.
