Photo-realistic 3D laser scan data

Euclideon has unveiled its latest software for interpreting and streaming laser point clouds, solidscan. According to Euclideon, solidscan does not naïvely ‘interpolate’ points – instead, it uses a 3D carving technique to produce solid photo-realistic point clouds with no holes.

“This is not ‘meshing’ or photogrammetry,” said Euclideon CEO, Bruce Dell. “Instead, we have invented a completely new method that uses 3D objects with volume called ‘Atoms.’

“There is no upper limit to the detail that can be reproduced using solidscan. A 3 terabyte solidscan file can open and stream at the same speed as a 3 megabyte one.”

Additionally, solidscan removes moving objects and noise from laser scanned data – leaving only static objects.

Reflective surfaces like whiteboards and mirrors can now be laser scanned with photo-realistic results.

“solidscan technology creates many new opportunities for scanning organisations, said Bruce. “Traditionally a laser scanner was a tool for measurement – now it becomes a tool for copying the real world.”

Euclideon claims that solidscan will:

  • Solve laser scanning problems – Solidscan automatically removes holes and reflection noise in laser scanned data.
  • Open up new markets – The uses and markets for your laser scanner are now 20 times larger with solidscan technology.
  • Remove moving objects – People walking past the scanner, cars and LiDAR noise from reflective surfaces automatically are removed by solidscan.
  • Display real estate – Produce aesthetically pleasing copies of buildings for use by the general public.
  • Improve digitisation work-flow – Solid point cloud data means no more clicking the wrong points by accident during digitization!
  • Create realistic models – For historical preservation or display. Scan Golf courses, race tracks and hotel rooms.
  • Replace ‘bubble view’ products – Leave behind the fundamental limitations of ‘bubble’ or panoramic image viewing products by looking at any part of the scan at any time, with complete freedom of movement and measurement in 3D.
  • Stream over the internet – Users with Geoverse MDM can easily stream solidscan models over ordinary ADSL Internet connections. No degradation, decimation or ‘thinning’ or ‘meshing’ of the data is performed. This is only possible due to the efficiency of Euclideon’s Unlimited Detail algorithm.
