The Royal Flying Doctors Services (RFDS) has recently launched a campaign that offers people the chance to purchase a virtual patch of sky along the flightpaths they cross on a daily basis to complete rescue missions.
The ‘Buy the Sky’ campaign targets a new generation of supporters who want to help the organisation deliver life-saving work to their fellow Australians.
Although donors won’t actually ‘own’ the sky, they will be able to choose a name for their virtual patch and will receive a digital certificate showing their name written in the sky. Supporters can also opt in to receive Flight Alerts indicating how often an RFDS plane is flying through the specific patch of sky.
In order to offer supporters the chance to buy the sky, the RFDS worked with MapData Services to map the sky along its flight routes into squared kilometre patches.
MapData Services provided the RFDS with a grid overlay of all its flight routes across Australia – so it could accurately pinpoint the specific location of each virtual sky patch.
Anyone can show their support for this life-saving organisation by ‘buying’ a patch of sky along one of the RFDS’ flight routes for just a $50 donation.
