GIS Day Events Around the Globe, from www.gisday.com.

 

International GIS Day is celebrated on the Wednesday of Geography Awareness Week, this year on Wednesday 18 November 2015. There a number of ways to get involved, including participating in one of many events, entering a competition or taking part online.

 

ATTEND AN EVENT

There are some 66 events taking place all across Australia and another six events taking place in New Zealand. Visit www.gisday.com for an interactive web map of all the registered events.

The biggest event taking place in Australia will be Brisbane GIS Day, which will see over  30 exhibitors, including local and international businesses who will deliver intriguing insight into the future of technology including, 3D maps, 3D gaming, the Internet of Things, UAVs, mobile imaging, innovative use of satellite imagery and much more. Brisbane GIS Day 2015 is FREE to attend but registration is required, so get your ticket now at http://www.gisday.com.au/register.

 

A WIDE ARRAY OF RESOURCES

It’s still not too late to organise your own GIS Day event. To make it easy for you, the GIS Day website has a wide selection of resources, including templates, videos and activities that can be downloaded for free.

National Geographic magazine has been an instrumental mapmaker for over a hundred years and have published a collection of materials in its “Explore! The Power of Maps” initiative for this week’s Geography Awareness week.

Designed for school students, the Ash Cloud Apocalypse is an online initiative that aims help participants develop their GIS skills, map their own risk data and analyse different patterns within global datasets. Click here to register.

ENTER A COMPETITION

GIS Cloud is running a GIS Day contest in conjunction with Spatial Vision. The competition will reward the best ideas for doing meaningful work in their local community or society in general through maps by helping contestants with bringing the project to reality. Enter your project by 18 November for your chance win.

 

TAKE PART ONLINE

If you can’t make it to an event, you can always attend GIS Day online by following the coverage on social media with the hashtag #GISDay. It’s also a great time to share the interesting work you’ve been doing with fellow GIS specialists over the world.
