FIG 2016 Christchurch – abstracts due this week

The next FIG Working Week, held in Christchurch, New Zealand, 2-6 May 2016, is making a final call for papers. The deadline for abstract submission is 15 November, 2015 for both peer review papers and non-peer review papers.

The overall theme of the Working Week is ‘Recovery from Disaster’, a response to the 201, Christchurch earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale and shocked the population of the province of Canterbury.

The Working Week is hosted by FIG and the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (NZIS) as the local host. The FIG Working Week 2016 has wide support throughout New Zealand with a commitment already pledged by Christchurch City Council and Land Information New Zealand, which is New Zealand’s government department responsible for land titles, geodetic and cadastral survey systems and topographic information.

The event organisers have already released a preliminary programme, consisting of three days and number of compelling plenary sessions, including:

Plenary Session 1: The Christchurch story “Christchurch’s response to the 2011 earth quake”

  • Ms Lianne Dalziel, Mayor of Christchurch
  • Mr Duncan Gibb, Founding General Manager of SCIRT (Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team)

Plenary Session 2: Disaster Management and Recovery framework – The Surveyors response

  • Representative/s from Geospatial Information Authority of Japan
  • Mr Gregory Scott, United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management
  • Mr Keith Ball, World Bank

Plenary Session 3: The Public, The Private and the Peoples response for Disaster Management and Recovery in the Surveying Profession – New technologies

  • Mr Bryn Fosburgh, Trimble Navigation
  • Prof. Pengfei Cheng, Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping
  • Mr Sam Johnso, Student Volunteer Army

The papers in the technical streams will cover the following topics:

  • Professional Education
  • Spatial Information Management
  • Hydrography
  • Positioning and Measurement
  • Engineering Surveys
  • Cadastre and Land Management
  • Spatial Planning and Development
  • Valuation and the Management of Real Estate
