Exciting features in Position magazine

Position Magazine

The public sector is one of the greatest consumers of geographic services in Australia, perhaps even more so than mining and agriculture. Within the public sector, local governments require up-to-date and detailed spatial information to make the best decisions possible for the local community.

Another sector heavily reliant on a high standard of location intelligence is the utilities. Whether for pre-emptive maintenance of decades-old or recent infrastructure, being able to re-route services due to an unexpected failure, or for gaining the most efficiency during greenfield developments, the utilities sector spends vast amounts on sophisticated geographical systems.

Position magazine’s regular, annual ‘GIS in local government services’ and ‘Utilities ¬ design, planning and management’ features will once again be seen in the June/July issue for 2014. Users, designers, and purchasers of spatial and surveying systems will see the latest innovations, what¹s new on the market, and how others in their sector put the systems to good use.

To tie in with readers in the utilities sectors, Position magazine will also be covering the GITA Annual Conference, where the leaders in the use of geospatial technologies in the utilities sector get together to talk about their success stories and trade information on best practice.

And, in recognition of the fact that geospatial services are more often than not being delivered via the use of online services, Position magazine will also feature Cloud computing ¬ remote data management.

A new addition

The latest addition to the topic line-up for Position magazine is the inclusion of Hydrography, especially as the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 revealed just how poor our ocean floor maps really are. On a more local note, however, the mapping of rivers, estuaries, and coasts is becoming ever more important, especially as the incidence of floods – along with inevitable sea-level rise – will only rise as the climate continues to rapidly change.
