The media was in a frenzy last week over a list of areas not shown in Google Earth due to political or security reasons. Major news papers around the world ran the story, with the Daily Mail perhaps the most in-depth.

Big Think’s “Honey, I Melted Australia!”, showcases some of the Australia’s most absurd maps like the dog/cat map and some simply incorrect ones, such as a particularly old Dutch map.

Quartz analysed the part of the globe that never shows up in statistical maps and the environmental and humanitarian reasons why it so critical to collect better data there.

Chinese search engine and mapmakers Baidu mapped the 2.9 billion trips made in China by people travelling to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, as shown on Maps Mania.

Gotta love a satisfyingly simple map. But while the Project Ukku wind prediction map may look simple, Maps Mania showed that there’s some serious programming behind it- no less than 51 simulations.
