RRS Discovery 3D

LiDAR News talks of a fascinating case study in which a company created a 3D model of the RRS Discovery – the last traditional wooden three-masted ship built in Britain, which also famously carried the explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first successful journey to the Antarctic in 1901.

LiDAR News also has a video and post on a UAV developer that’s using 3D printed parts to rapidly develop and improve its UAV design.

Space.com talks of some ‘strikingly geometric’ shapes uncovered on the Moon that have shifted scientists’ ideas on its early formation (no, it wasn’t aliens).

GeoLounge has a great post on the history and discovery of ‘geoglyphs’ those big, sometimes ancient, pieces of art that stretch across various countrysides.

GISLounge has an update to our previously discussed Minecraft map of Great Britain, where the creator – working for the Ordnance Survey – has upped the resolution from 22 billion ‘blocks’ to a whopping 83 billion blocks.

An old post that I recently came across has Noggin OCA discussing why risk management needs to be geospatially aware.

ECOS Magazine has an article on a global study that has created a ‘global roadmap’ to prioritise which roads in the world need to be built first, but also balancing the competing demands of development and environmental protection.

Maps Mania charts the explosive growth of Megacities across the globe, showing their relative size as they grew out to their current mammoth proportions.
