With the annual Adelaide Fringe festival in full swing, the From High Above blog has released some aerial imagery of some of the festival’s most famous venues, including The Garden of Unearthly Delights, Gluttony, the Clipsal track and The Royal Croquet Club taken during mad March (and mad February).

 

Geoawesomeness outlines a fascinating new method for determining the location of a phone that involves monitoring its battery drain. Higher battery drain means further distance from a phone tower, which is then used to estimate location. Very clever stuff.

 

IEEE Spectrum pose an interesting question: “Will You Need a New License to Operate a Self-Driving Car?” Indeed, as Google and other companies draw closer to a completed product, officials in California are pondering the same thing.

 

Speaking of self-driving cars, are Apple looking to enter the business? Perhaps not, but even if so, Daimler/Mercedes Benz Chief isn’t worried.

 

Maps Mania has a beautiful 3D map of Berlin, which is really a site to behold. It contains 3D representations of 500,000 buildings, each captured from above using LiDAR.

 

Cameron Shorter has the news that the free OSGeo-Live 8.5 has been released, which includes over 50 open source, standards compliant geospatial applications.

 

HERE has announced a new API for data visualisation, known as Data Lens.
