Roger Tomlinson

Geospatial World has a touching eulogy for the ‘father of GIS’, Roger Tomlinson, who passed away in Mexico on February 7.

While we just reported on delays to GPS-III, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the original GPS. Arguably one of the most revolutionary technologies of this generation, GPS forever changed the way that people make their way across the planet. With this in mind, the Inquirer has outlined this 25 year history in a memorial post.

And, continuing the thread of space-based technology, GeoSpatial World also outlines a recent research report that states that global spending on space programs has decreased for first time in 20 years.

Perhaps its time to start looking at those next-gen satellite-on-a-chip units that only cost about US$40.

The BBC internet blog has a post on an Unmanned Aircraft Systems event focused on their use in broadcasting, recently held in the UK. Niche, but it shows just how many applications these little robot wonders have.

Speaking of niche applications for UAVs, how about Renault’s concept car that comes complete with its own drone – for checking out traffic conditions up ahead. Hair brained, or genius? You decide.

And because none of us can get enough UAV info, AUVSI has a post outlining recent efforts to combat poaching in Africa using – yup – UAVs.

Gulf News reports that Dubai will be the first Arab city to be seen on Google’s Street View.

Following our post on Queensland Police using Zebedee to map crime scenes, here is a map of Queensland Crime Scenes. Don’t expect 3D though – just their locations.
