Apple has purchased mapping startup Mapsense, further strengthening their ability to provide maps for mobile devices, according to a report from tech media outlet, Re/codeMapsense is a San Francisco-based startup that’s able to sort through large geotagged datasets to create quick geographical visualisations of location-based data points that can be embedded into apps.

According to the report, Apple paid somewhere between $25 million and $30 million for the Mapsense 12-person team, which will now join the Apple team.

Mapsense has created a cloud-based high-speed mapping engine capable of ingesting and indexing large amounts of data with rapid search, filtering and visual analysis tools.

Mapsense was established in 2013 by engineer Erez Cohen. Earlier this year, the company launched its developer platform, and welcomed customers from the financial sector, advertising, government and Fortune 500 firms.
