SSSI appoints new CEO, Tony Wheeler

By on 6 May, 2020

A veteran of the Australian geospatial industry, Tony Wheeler has been appointed CEO of the Surveying & Spatial Sciences Institute.

Mr. Wheeler’s career spans 38 years, taking in earth observation, surveying, GIS and related information technology, including 12 years at Sinclair Knight Merz — now Jacobs.

In 2010 he co-founded and led as managing director the water saving irrigation technology company Envirogrower, with which he successfully led and delivered large desert restoration / wildlife rehabilitation projects for Abu Dhabi’s environment agency in the western region of the United Arab Emirates.

Among a smorgasbord of committee and board participation roles, Mr. Wheeler was founding director and inaugural Chairman of the Board of the Australian Spatial Information Business Association (SIBA) and one of six appointed private sector executives to the federal government’s Action Agenda for the Spatial Information Industry in 2001.

SSSI President Dr. Zaffar Mohamed Ghouse welcomed Mr. Wheeler to the role.

“On behalf of SSSI Members, Board and Staff, I welcome Tony Wheeler as CEO. Tony is well known in the spatial industry for his outstanding leadership. I look forward to working with Tony to take SSSI to great heights,” he said.
