Tomnod co-founder and DigitalGlobe head of platform products Luke Barrington launches Locate16.

The Locate Conference 2016 has now begun, with today’s Open Expo Day allowing all to partake in the most cutting-edge spatial technologies. Conference organisers have revealed that they have received over 500 registrations- making Locate16 the biggest Locate conference yet.

Locate16 is the national conference of the spatial and surveying professions of Australia and New Zealand. The conference is taking place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, with the main proceedings going from Tuesday through Thursday. Registration remains open, including for Tuesday’s Expo Open Day, which is free to all.

The Open Expo Day is free to attend and allows attendees to partake in discussions with 49 cutting-edge geospatial organisations showcasing their innovative technologies and giving presentations and demonstrations throughout the day. Registrations can be made here.

The official conference proceedings will begin on Wednesday morning, with a host of impressive plenaries and keynotes planned from local and international speakers across private, not-for-profit, academic and government sectors.

On Monday night, Tomnod co-founder and DigitalGlobe head of platform products Luke Barrington kicked off Locate16 with a presentation exposing the value of spatial data. His plenary on Wednesday is set to be a highlight of the event and will build on his opening presentation to show how advancements in machine learning and satellite technologies will revolutionise earth observation.

The winner of the Locate16 Hackfest was also revealed on Monday night to be Hugh Saalmans of Insurance Australia (IAG) Limited who innovatively used Australia’s G-NAF dataset. Saalmans’s winning solution, CityGrowth, uses the creation date of every address in G-NAF across Australia to generate an interactice heatmap of new addresses in an interactive. Saalmans will actually be presenting his keynote “The Geospatial Future of Insurance” at Locate on Wednesday as part of the PROTECT stream.
