The University of New South Wales is to run a two-day course for professional surveyors who wish to incorporate GPS / GNSS techniques into their survey practices.

New South Wales state government legislation has evolved to better accommodate GPS surveying practices for legal cadastral surveys and spatial professionals.

The process of GPS/GNSS surveying presents a new way of tackling a positioning task but users must grapple with new measurement concepts and lots of new jargon.

To help address these issues, the university’s Dr Craig Roberts and Simon McElroy from the Land & Property Management Authority will present the two-day course at the Kensington Campus of the university beginning Thursday 17 February.

The course will present an overview of basic GPS/GNSS for surveyors followed by some theory on how GPS, and RTK-GPS works, discussion of major error sources, and some tips on practical use and avoiding pitfalls.

Information about Network-RTK techniques and the CORSnet-NSW reference station network will be presented. Hands-on exercises will help surveyors better utilise a range of free online GPS services available to them.

The major GPS instrument vendors will be invited to showcase their latest equipment for the delegates.
